Wristwatch packs Wi-Fi sniffer, also tells time
Watches may have been created to tell the time, but these days it's much more cutting-edge to use your timepiece to tell you when you're in the vicinity of a Wi-Fi hotspot.
The Wi-Fi Detecting Watch: find web access whilst walking the streets
The Wi-Fi Detecting Watch doesn’t let you actually surf the web, but the timepiece will at least warn you when you’re in a Wi-Fi zone and save you the bother of, say, firing up your laptop only to find that there are no networks within range.
Although the watch may look like one of Casio’s designs from late 1980s, the Wi-Fi watch has the added benefit of a chronograph, countdown feature, alarm and dual-time mode. It’s also water resistant to 100 meters, just in case you’re up for some underwater web surfing.
The Wi-Fi Detecting Watch is available online now for £20 (€25/$40), but the minimum order quantity is six watches.
It would also be ideal for anyone whose Wi-Fi Detecting T-Shirt is in the wash.Samsung digital TV phone en route to Blighty
A Samsung broadcast has announced what it claims is the world’s first slider handset capable of receiving DVB-H mobile digital TV signals.
Samsung's P690: picks up DVB-H broadcasts
DVB-H is largely accepted as the standard format for mobile TV broadcasts in Europe, following a decision in Brussels last month that affectively requires member states to “encourage” use of the technology.
That said, the Samsung P960 also supports several other mobile TV formats, including DVB-CBMS – which has already been trialled in Italy and is expected to become available soon in France, Belgium, Poland and Russia.
P960 and friend: so it works in a wine bar - what about the beach?
A 2.6in display means the P960 is hardly set-up for watching, say, Titanic – unless you want to end-up cross-eyed. However, telly on the go is a benefit if you’re on the train and no one’s left a newspaper lying around
The 16.7mm-thick tri-band phone also supports HSDPA downloads of up to 3.6Mb/s and has a three-megapixel camera built-in.
Samsung hasn’t confirmed when the P690 will be available in Europe yet, but then DVB-H isn’t even fully up and running in the UK yet – so the phone may not arrive for some time.Motorola partners with Kodak on cameraphone
Images have emerged of what's claimed to be an upcoming Motorola handset which features a five-megapixel camera from photography heavyweight Kodak.
Motorola's ZN5: 5Mp Kodak snapper included

The phone’s rumoured to be called the Motozine ZN5, Chinese-language site Keysj claims, and it’ll no doubt be punted as the ideal handset for photography enthusiasts, despite there being several five-megapixel phones on the market already, such as LG’s Viewty and Samsung’s SGH-G800 – reviewed here.
It's claimed this image was snapped with a ZN5

However, with the Kodak brand attached to the handset, it's clear the ZN5 will be pitched by Motorola against Sony Ericsson's Cyber-shot phones, which are also named after a popular photography brand.
Kodak’s auto-focus snapper features a super bright xenon flash and pictures reportedly taken on the handset look clear and crisp. The two manufacturers have also built a sliding cover onto the ZN5’s camera section, protecting the lens from dust, grime and scratches.
Little else is known about the phone, aside from the fact that it’s reasonably thin, has a 3.5mm headphone jack for audio and a USB port. A purple button on one side of the phone also looks like a shortcut key for image snapping.
A European release date for the phone hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Dell revamps liquid-cooled gaming rig
Dell has rolled out its latest XPS gaming desktop - much to the chagrin of its Alienware subsidiary, we expect, which we're sure would prefer it's parent would leave the gaming stuff to the specialist.
Whatever, the XPS 730 H2C is a "premier gaming desktop" and "one of the most advanced gaming platforms on the planet", Dell spin merchants claimed.
Dell's XPS 730 H2C: quad everything
What makes it so is a motherboard based on Nvidia's nForce 790i Ultra SLI chipset - reviewed here - a factory-overclockable Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core processor, Corsair Dominator DDR 3 memory, and a choice of Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT graphics cards in SLI mode, or a pair of AMD ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 cards, each of which has two GPUs on board. It's driven by a 1kW power supply.
Redesigned liquid cooling rig
Building on the quad theme, the 730 can take four hard drives.
There's a regular, cheaper XPS 730 available for $3999/£2499 - that's the starting price. What differentiates the starts-at-$4999/£2799 H2C version is the fancy two-stage liquid cooling system that features a "re-designed CPU coldplate to to provide more uniform cooling to all four processor cores", a chipset coldplate, a fan dedicated to the CPU voltage regulator parts, and a new pump control that slows it down when the system idles.
The 730's case is made from anodised aluminium, which is coloured red or blue - your choice, gamers - if you by the H2C model.
Lenovo ThinkPad X300 sub-notebook
Review The launch of the Lenovo ThinkPad X300 attracted plenty of comment from Register Hardware readers. ‘Pah,' you said, ‘who cares how thin a laptop is?’
‘Why would anyone pay two grand for a Lenovo when the HP 2510p is available for about £1500?’ you asked, and ‘What is the 13in screen all about?’
There was a common view that the X300 showed up Apple's MacBook Air as a piece of inconsequential fluff, and while the Reg readership is collectively correct on that point it is pretty much wrong on the others because the X300 is utterly gorgeous.
Lenovo's ThinkPad X300: light of weight but no lightweight
The key features of the new ThinkPad are the slender chassis, light weight and emphasis on energy efficiency. A regular laptop with a 14in screen, such as a ThinkPad T61, measures 335.5 x 237 x 27.6mm and weighs 2.34kg. It’s a perfectly reasonable size and shape and is fairly portable, but it is eclipsed by the ThinkPad X300.
Although the screen is only slightly smaller - it's 13.3 inches across - and the dimensions are fairly similar - 318 x 231 x 23.4mm - the weight is a whole kilo less: 1.33kg. That’s the weight of the cut-down model with a three-cell battery and no optical drive, while our review unit had a six-cell battery and a super-slim DVD writer that together raised the weight to 1.54kg. Even so, the X300 is very light.
Flat pack
Even the power cord and AC adapter are lightweight, together amounting to 370g. So the travel weight of the package is well under 2kg.
